Ever wondered what it takes to be an entrepreneur? The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success? Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures.

It’s a 54-hour mentored event where hardware-engineers, software-developers, graphic-designers, and business people come together, pitch ideas, form teams, build products, and create startups all in a single weekend.
The event culminates in a competition where these newly formed startups present their venture to judges for fame and prizes.

Startup Weekend provides an unprecedented level of networking, team building, learning, and life changes for its attendees and their communities. Sometimes a company emerges, sometimes one doesn’t, but every time people leave with more experience, insight, knowledge, friends, and resources than they came with.

This Disruptive Technology themed event is focused on hardware engineering and disruptive innovation. It will be coordinated with several complimentary events, such as startup methodologies workshops, technology bootcamps by Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla at PolyglotConf, and innovative speaker events. The weekend will be followed by an SW-Next event to help mentor startups beyond the weekend.

Why should you get involved?

  • Meet other startup enthusiasts such as developers, business managers, marketing gurus, graphic artists
  • Build a startup in less than 54 hours
  • 6-7 meals and drinks provided

Jason Bailey

CEO of East Side Games   |  LinkedIn

Jason Bailey is the poster child for ADHD. After being kicked out of several schools and fired from numerous jobs, he was forced to become an entrepreneur. Success followed in spurts, the largest of which was Super Rewards. As founder and CEO, Bailey bootstrapped the platform from accidental idea to profitability to a massive exit, all in 18 months. This was despite having the lamest name in the history of the web. Only being called SuprReward.ly could have been lamer.

Bailey is now CEO and founder of East Side Games, a fiercely independent leader in the mobile and social games. He is also a founder of Growlab, a pioneering Canadian start up accelerator. Follow him on twitter or grindr as @YVRjason or @chickenhole

Good videogames do not emerge from only the sum of their parts, meaning that production planning and risk control alone will not produce a great experience.

To create enjoyable entertainment, you need to embrace risk and dive into the unknown, seeking that elusive magical spark.
