Startup Weekend’s Eventful Year: 260 Events In 202 Cities; Startups Raised $30M+

Startup Weekend, whose mission is to kickstart and foster startup communities worldwide through events and networking sessions, had a very lively 2011.

According to internal statistics shared exclusively with TechCrunch, the organization held a total of 260 events in 202 cities, in 67 countries (you can find the obligatory accompanying infographic below).

All in all, the ‘startup weekends’ attracted some 21,316 people, who collectively formed 2,817 teams.

Startups that were incubated at its events raised at least $30 million in outside funding in the course of last year, although Startup Weekend CMO Joey Pomerenke tells me there were probably more fundraising rounds completed that they simply don’t know about yet.

Vancouver Startup Weekend Winner Takes Top Canadian Spot in Global Startup Battle

Vancouver Startup Weekend winner My Best Helper came in # 10 in the Global Startup Battle, the best position of any Canadian city. The only other Canadian entry to make the top 20 was Halifax at #15.

All of us in the Startup Weekend community would like to offer a huge congratulations to Awesome Ship. The team out of Startup Weekend Hong Kong was the winner of this year’s Global Startup Battle. Startup Weekend Vancouver Winner MyBestHelper Enters Global Startup Battle

MyBestHelper, which won first place at Startup Weekend Vancouver 2011 on Sunday, will be competing for a spot in the 2011 Global Startup Battle.

The global battle is an international competition for the winners of the city events, which also included Halifax and Toronto in Canada. Enough votes will earn a city winner the chance to fly to Silicon Valley for a Launch Conference.

MyBestHelper won in front of a panel of judges including in front of a panel of judges including BC Angel Investor of the Year Boris Wertz, Brent Holliday of Capital West Partners, and Mike Satterfield of Yaletown Venture Partners. The startup was co-founded by Alexandra Greenhill, a physician and mother of three.

Eric Brooke wrote a great review of the event. He has some very good suggestions which we’ll incorporate into the Summer Event (yes, that’s right folks). Give his write up a read. It begins:

The essence, is you “form” a business” in 54 hours over a weekend. You pitch and people choose to join your team. And you and your team, show off in a 4 minute pitch (to all the teams) on sunday evening and a bunch of judges choose.

Overall it was an excellent weekend, I met a lot of people in the startup community that I had not met before. More importantly I met a lot of people I want to stay in contact with. I learned somethings about myself. In fact I enjoyed the event so much that if I can afford the time and cash I will go to the one in Seattle in January 2012.

This past weekend Shane Reiser and I took the train up to Vancouver to facilitate the Vancouver Startup Weekend event. The event went off extremely well hosting around 130 participants that formed into 14 teams and all had amazing demos.
